Social and On-The-Go

(by Craig Cooke, CEO)

Social Media has been all the rage over the past few years. Sites such as MySpace, Facebook and LinkedIn have grown at a meteoric pace. It seems that Social Media is here to stay. It’s not just a passing fad as it does provide a valuable service to users, which is the development and nurturing of relationships. However, with the advent of the iPhone, I see the “killer app” for social media. It’s on-the-go social or mobile social, whatever you want to call it, but essentially it is social media applications for mobile phones.

I recently downloaded Facebook and LinkedIn apps for my iPhone. I have to admit that it is somewhat addicting to interact with these mobile social apps. It is a different experience than being on your laptop or desktop computer. And it’s different than text messaging or instant messaging. It’s just another form of communication to file among the many methods of interacting with human relationships. But from my experience, it is unique and has a place. The convenience factor is huge, and it is extremely easy.

It’s still early for this killer app to reach critical mass. Other phone makers need to catch up to the iPhone. The apps available on the iPhone are incredible and there is no comparison. The extension of the social media experience is here but it will take some time. How long remains to be seen since it’s been over a year since the iPhone has been released and as I mentioned, there are no real competitors. My recommendation, go get an iPhone and get mobile with the social. It’s here to stay, and it’s only going to get bigger than it already is.
