First of all, let’s define what a Rich Internet Application (RIA) is. A quick and easy definition is a cross between web-based applications and traditional desktop applications. In the age of the Internet, why would someone want to combine Internet applications with old school desktop apps? The simple answer is to combine the power of the two to create a hybrid application that is extremely practical, powerful and complete with a rich user experience. It is the next natural evolution of software; first desktop applications, then Internet-based applications and now the hybrid Rich Internet Application.

Social Media has been all the rage over the past few years. Sites such as MySpace, Facebook and LinkedIn have grown at a meteoric pace. It seems that Social Media is here to stay. It’s not just a passing fad as it does provide a valuable service to users, which is the development and nurturing of relationships. However, with the advent of the iPhone, I see the “killer app” for social media. It’s on-the-go social or mobile social, whatever you want to call it, but essentially it is social media applications for mobile phones.

Jupiter Research recently reported that 94 percent of the travel sector sees a strong return on investment in online advertising, versus TV and radio (3 percent) and print (3 percent).

China surpassed the United States in the number of broadband connections to the Internet in August of 2008 according to a study performed by Point Topic
