Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science

The Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science has evolved and grown, shaped by the needs of the community it serves. Located in the Watts-Willowbrook section of South Los Angeles, the institution benefits from its location and the corresponding diversity and complexity of its patient population by creating an academic environment unlike any other. Through innovative basic science, the university conducts education, patient care and research programs - training physicians and allied health professionals to provide care to underserved populations.

The university approached Rhythm Interactive about a year ago with the desire to enhance their interaction with alumni. To do so, Drew hired Rhythm to develop an alumni website. The website was developed to meet goals and objectives that were formulated by Drew’s Alumni Relations office. A key feature was an alumni registration form that quickly enabled alumni to access the password-protected alumni community. Once an alumnus was logged into the system, they had access to a message board system that facilitated alumni communication and interaction.

The website also provided alumni with a contact list that enabled alumni to reach out to each other beyond the website. The site also contained a news/announcement area, an online donations function and a newsletter area where alumni could read monthly newsletters in an electronic format. The launch of the site was highly publicized, and the reaction by alumni was very positive, as many registered within days of the launch. Since that time, registered users have continuously increased, as has the overall use of the site.

Overall the project was a complete success. Since this project Drew has hired Rhythm for the design and production of their monthly university newsletter and the redesign of the research section of the website, as well as the complete redesign of the university’s entire website – which is currently in progress.
