Analytics and Online Advertising

(by Peter Bohenek, President)

As online advertising continues to explode, we must continue to develop effective ways to measure results.

The Internet offers companies advertising opportunities that reach across the globe, and in many cases, greatly increase sales. This new medium is fast becoming the primary marketing/communication tool for many companies. The reasons for this shift are many, but one primary reason, if not one the most important one, is the ability to measure effectiveness.

Where traditional advertising was fuzzy and gray – Internet advertising is bright and transparent. Using the Internet along with several software tools, ROI can be tracked to the penny on both an individual and an aggregate basis. Talk about immediate feedback that you can understand and then improve upon! The Internet is your advertising weapon of choice. It’s effective, immediate, and it leaves no stone unturned.

The key is working from a sales strategy and establishing related goals and objectives. Once the advertising channels have been selected, it’s time to plan how results will be measured. This will involve website statistics, data collection, analytic software and one or more human minds to analyze the data.

The data will reveal how many people interacted with your advertisements, how many people clicked through to your website and what they did when they got there. Now you can compare the actual results to the goals and objectives that you started with.

Did the effort exceed or fall short of meeting the targets? What was the cost of your efforts compared to the results? What trends can be spotted in the data that could help you understand where improvement can be made? Did your customers make it to the product page and then not buy? If so, how many left the website and how many continued to shop for other items? These are just a few scenarios that can be tracked utilizing Internet-related tools.

The bottom-line is that advertising effort on the Internet is not only effective, but it can be measured and improved upon. Why spend money marketing without the ability to understand exactly what each dollar spent gained in sales?

This is the reality of Internet Advertising: measuring results and understanding exactly what is working and what is not. It’s time to wake up from the gray fuzzy nightmare of traditional advertising and see the trees from the forest.
