What Can RSS Do For You?

(by Craig Cooke, CEO)

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication (Rich Site Summary is a less popular term). Over the past two years, RSS has become an extremely popular format for communicating news over the Internet. The technology is a lightweight XML format designed for listing headlines and content. It’s a method for distributing news for your organization beyond your website. You deliver the content in an XML text format, and a user subscribes to the RSS feed via a reader that supports the technology. Since the format is text, graphics are not delivered, and the user has control over the formatting of the text. In the world of RSS, content is king. Graphics cannot aid in the communication process, so the content delivered must be engaging and worthwhile for the user to read.

RSS provides many benefits to Internet users. It allows users to receive information as soon as it is published. It is also private since users do not need to submit any private information in order to receive an RSS feed. It complies to standards and can be received within email messages or separately. Subscribing and unsubscribing is simple, and spam filters do not interfere with RSS feeds.

Utilizing RSS technology can provide several benefits to your organization. It provides an added value service of keeping your customers informed, enhancing customer retention and brand value. It is fast and cost-effective to distribute, and RSS feeds can even be monetized. If you have news and information of value, RSS can support paid content distribution. Some publishers have placed text ads into their feeds as another method to generate sponsorship revenue. As people become more familiar with RSS, more creative methods will be employed to generate revenue and/or add value to a brand.
